Last Night I watched Werner Herzog's 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' about the Chauvet Cave in the South of France. There sealed away for thousands of years, exists the earliest work of art yet discovered, thought to be 32,000 or so years old. The drawings are incredibly advanced and beautiful, capturing form in smooth strokes and the illusion of movement. Almost just as fascinating as the cave's innards are the eccentric cave researchers- the poetic ex circus performer, the gentleman who can 'sniff' out the location of cave or the fellow who dresses like an Inuit. One can't help but laugh every now and then at Herzog's phrasing/ sensitive commentary. Sadly I did not get to see 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' in 3D as it was originally screened in cinemas.
